Default India ink and brushes

How would I clean off India ink from brushes? I was using them last night. Afterwards, I tried to clean the brushes by using water and soap, but it's hard as f*ck to get a lot of it off. I think I might have to go buy new brushes if necessary, but I'm on a tight budget . . .

So any suggestions on how to preserve brushes or any alternatives I can use?? I use the Speedball brand, BTW.

Idk how well it works for brushes, but for my nibs I use rubbing alcohol.

I think it's a safe bet to get new brushes. I've tried to get the ink out of my brush and have had no success. Just save the brushes you've already used and only use them for india ink stuff. As for painting with other mediums, you'd do yourself a favor to just buy new ones.

I use Speedball Speed Clean on my nibs and brushes, and I use Speedball Super Black ink. Not sure if this stuff cleans other inks as well, but I tend to use what the manufacturer recommends, and it works 95% of the time.

For India ink such as Higgins, I used to use a solution of 24% Dawn, and it worked pretty good, but without drying my nibs right away, it promoted rust.

For brushes, replacing them after a lot of inking is a good idea. I know it sounds gross, but smoothing them out with spit works to keep horse hair brushes in shape. That's an old trick taught way back in school.

If your using india ink, I would suggest cleaning the brush and nib after each application, it migth sound annoying, but it increases the life of the brush and nib.

And like Az said, spit works, I have a habit to give a brush a quick lick in my mouth before use, it sounds gross, but it is effective.

You could also change to a non waterproof version, its alot easier on your nibs and brushes, but it does have its negative sides, but so does the heavier type of ink, you just have to learn to work around it.

Oh and, when your finished cleaning out your brushes, leave them a tiny bit wet, and rub them on some artist soap (I haven't tried regular soap, but I'm sure it will do fine) - its only like $6 or so for a bar that will last you a lifetime anyway.

Oh and when you're finished "IDK, my BFF JILL" instead of being lazy, actualy type in the six extra letters.

That was a typographical error and not lazyness. There's a difference ;P
