~30 minutes?

Trying to not use lines. At all. Not even for sketching. Thinking in volumes is harder than expected...

Wait a minute! Do you got BYU? If you do I think I know one of the rigging teachers. I think. We worked together at Disney, but he left a few months ago to go teach.

Anyway you can probably just focus on Visual Development. That's what I do, and I'm Maya stupid.

Its hard to explain, since a lot of stuff I paint really frustrates me because I have this weird thing where if I'm painting personal stuff I can't finish painting, so speed paints are my only option. :/ It makes me mad.

I do a lot of film studies to practice color and using fewer brush strokes to explain form. Films that are really well art directed really give you an awesome sense of lighting and space, and so when you practice them, you kind of end up with a visual vocabulary that really helps. I also try it paint in planes rather than details, and I'm often really surprised by how little you need to explain a form, as long as the color and values work.

Another thing I do is to reference a nice background, but make up elements that fit within the background, trying to match color and value. IE the structure above is made up, but I started by referencing a nice photo of some colorful mountains.

Gotcha. Actually, that helps a lot. Sometimes I get over zealous and miss the basics. Thanks, I'm gonna go paint now....

Dangit jigokuen, how are you painting those buildings? Is it only 2point perspective you're using?

Usually I don't like to use pure one point. I will if I'm lazy, but I don't really like to. All objects converge in more than one direction, so one point feels very "sterile" to me. if I do use one point, I usually pick one or two more points way off the page to converge to, and as a result the respective (bad example with that bridge) usually doesn't feel too off, and it feels more like a wider angle lens. Of course you can't go crazy and choose a second vanishing point too close to the one in the frame, otherwise it will start looking like the structure itself is pinched.
