![]() Hey guys, i was in the mood for making something informative.... (man what a strange mood to have....)
Anyways here is a little trick i found that seems to help my brain make that leap to doing lineart digitally. I think its the harshness that sketching on white usually has, but when i have a soft blur on the lineart it tends to make it less stark and hurt the eyes less. So perhaps thats why i can sketch like this... or maybe im just insane? Another nice thing is that it seems to make cross hatching less harsh, because it makes the surrounding area to a large amount of ink darker. Just some things to remember, this only works if you sketch on a transparent layer, as in you cant have a fill on the layer, and you have to use the eraser, and not just switch to the background colour. Edit: Another cool thing with this trick is that if you use white on this layer, you can make an illusion of a stylized shiny highlight on skin, as it keeps the brushstroke white, but it has a light grey halo around it, and due to the magic of colour relativity it appears brighter at the center. ![]()

![]() Heh and i thought i was unique with using the outer glow for it D:, but this method imo is superior to the blur (which i did mention as the normal way of doing it) as it is less messy to work with layer wise, and it gives instant results as you work.

It's a strange but informative tutorial. Basically, this is faking the effect of the side of my hand always rubbing the carbon of my pencil everywhere on paper?

![]() Also, if you want to use the brush the entire time, instead of switching to the eraser, you can just fill a layer with black, and then add a layer mask to the layer. Then you can just switch between black and white with the brush tool. I use layer masks a lot, because I hate having to switch the different brush settings for the paintbrush and the eraser. Of course, if you like having different settings for both, you can still use the eraser and get the same effect with the layer mask.
