Great observation skills on the candles with the reference. I think one thing you can try is to draw the same candle piece from memory. Then compare it to the one you did with the reference.

Thanks, Xion. I'm gonna try it, as soon as I get some free time.
All I've been able to whip up in the last week is this; a 15-minute torso study!

In other news, I have officially graduated school. Whee!

Congrats! Regarding the torso study, you're still putting too heavy of an emphasis on drawing shadows off of lines. You might want to consider inverting the image and increasing the contrast so you really see that the shadows themselves have interesting shapes.

Just a sketch of a Balder Knight from Dark Souls, with no reference.
In-laws are staying here for the weekend, and I have effectively gotten my brother-in-law addicted to the wanton self-punishment that is Dark Souls.
Itís been a good weekend.

15 minute warm up sketch of Daryl Hannah.
It's tough doing a timed sketch, because as soon as 15 minutes were up, I set the stylus down, then had to fight the urge to go back in and fix/polish things.
Maybe next time!

Another 15 minute study-sketch, this time of Michael Douglas.
I really hope I can keep this trend going. I feel so out of touch with my art lately. Gotta work on my realism!

great study Do take note also of the lengths of the fingers though, your pinky and ring finger phalanges are out of control xP Looove those candles )

For faces you might want to do a planal face study, it will help lots.

Thanks, Ast. I can see my phallanges need to be kept in check (God, that sounds like an STD or something). Hands are, after all, one of my weaknesses/
Also, lol, I have that same picture of the face planes saved in my reference folder. I'll give it a shot when I get home from work.

Another 15 minute study. I don't know who the model is, so if you have a name, please let me know.

Also...

Me: "What should I draw today?"
Wife: "Mr. Potato Head!"

...10 minutes.

Another 15 minute portrait warmup sketch/study, another unknown model. As before, if anyone knows who this is, do let me know.
Also, imagine that! I ended up making her face too wide...

Another 15 minute sketch, this time of Nykhor Paul.
For this one, I actually spent more like 30 minutes, but thatís only because after 15 minutes, I decided I wanted to try and do the values, too, but then they came out looking crappy, so I scrapped them. Oh well.

I think you should work on the values a bit more. On the last piece the reference you used is a really great piece to use for value practice.

I will do that.

My wife asked me to sketch up a concept of one of her characters. These are the guidelines she gave me.
-Cliche archer gear
-Cliche mage staff
-Two knives
-Elf
-African
-Thin and tall
-Lithe-looking

Öand here she is.
I might do a better sketch of her in the future

I'm going to add something here about your observational skills.

One thing you need to do when using reference is follow the reference. Don't add stuff that isn't there. What I see happening is that the pics alone look good, and they come close to looking like the person you are referencing, but are off enough to not actually look like them.

By that same token, don't leave stuff out, either. I'm not talking about hair, hair moves and does all kinds of weird things that could take me a day to explain. I'm talking about structure. Don't add thickness to faces that isn't there, or now that person has the mumps. Do keep the shape of lips consistent with the reference, or now that person is doing a duck face.

Subtle differences here and there can make or break a reference piece. Now, this doesn't mean you aren't doing a good job, in fact I think these last few pieces are quite excellent. I just think you can push yourself to make even your 15-minute pieces look that much better.

Thanks, Professor.

Thing is, I AM trying to recreate things as I see them, but I always end up making them slightly too wide, for some reason. My wife keeps saying that it might be some kind of stigma, but I don't know for sure.
I did get called out for adding stuff before by Ast, so now I make sure to draw what I see; I just can't get a perfect likeness, yet, but I'm working on it. If nothing else, these studies are helping me to see different kinds of faces with an analytical eye (How do I know this person is Asian? How do I know this is a woman I'm looking at? How do this person's eyes differ from this other person's?)
I gotta say, though, 15 minutes is a self-imposed limit. There ARE some days, now, where I truly don't have time (like today! I worked late last night, and got called in this morning, and I'm working through the evening tonight!), but if I get the chance, I try to do more. 15 minutes are for warmup, or so I call it. But I agree with you: I could be doing better.

Part of the problem may be you are using lines to delineate your structure, instead of light and dark values. For instance, on the Nykhor Paul piece, there are so many variations of dark, choosing to go with dark lines on a white background throws it off. While I'm sure you could render it out, on a quick piece I would have started in the middle, blocked out the really dark areas, and THEN worked out the outline.

Of course, this is just me. Threes and Shimmering Sword have seen my do this in person, and can attest to it being effective. I'm sure they work completely different than I do, and that's a good thing. As long as you can see the things you need to concentrate on, that's probably the most important step towards kicking it up a few notches.

Keep up the awesome effort.
