Tried improving my understanding of shapes with a grey scale painting, followed by an attempt to shy away from the oversaturation coloring that I usually do.

I like this a lot. How do you take it from B&W to color, without a complete paint over? Very nice.

Thank you Prof Az

Its as simple as using a layer set to "Overlay" on top of the B&W layer.

This is Adobes explanation of what it does:
"Overlay multiplies or screens the colors, depending on the base color. Patterns or colors overlay the existing pixels while preserving the highlights and shadows of the base color. The base color is not replaced, but mixed with the blend color to reflect the lightness or darkness of the original color. "

That basically means that on a layer that has -no- color, an overlay layer will infuse the B&W layer with color, while respecting all the values of the B&W layer.

Overlay will not get you all the way to the finish and it works horrendously with layers that already has color, but it helps enormously with putting down a base color when you are happy with the values in a B&W image. After that its just slapping normal layers on top and make fixes like normal.

Nice work, Cruiser. That's quite a big leap from one to two. :P

I've found that overlay doesn't respect the values precisely. If you use a very light value color versus a darker value color, they will affect the value underneath accordingly. I think only using a color that is middle value will not affect the value beneath it. I still like using it a lot, and it does preserve it to a certain extent, but setting the blending mode to color would be closer to what you're saying. Even then, there might be slight value shifting (haven't tested for it).

I also think it works fine over existing colors as long as they're somewhat muted, but it basically does nothing to most saturated colors.

Yeah you are right Alucard. Color is probably a bit more precise to use, but only really works with B&W underneath. What I should probably be saying is that Overlay can push the colors and saturations of an underlying image, without affecting it's details in values. Using it against another colored layer is just very much guesswork so you have to change your color wheel around until you find what you are looking for, but the benefit of pushing the hue and saturation around so easily makes it worth it.

Had the opportunity to do a digital painting with a live reference in class, couldn't pass it up.

What REALLY REALLY annoys me is that I've been so dogpiled with work I haven't been able to work on any personal art since I started this quarter (sorry RO, that SE isn't going to be updated for another few weeks, probably >.<).
