A very nice concept btw!

Horray somebody cares about it!

Do you feel the deadline is too short, or is that when you think you'll be able to get an entry in?

It's not that I don't care, it's just that I don't think I'd be able to make it, mainly due to a lack of ideas for the contest.
But, I digress. I think the deadline should be July 15th, as RL said.

So... design sheets are a part of the submission? Designs and then an image of them doing their thang?

Anything Art Related I do on weekends. With one weekend still left for a different project, I'd have really just a few days to come up with a solid entry (which as a consequence wouldn't be as solid). Postponing it by two weeks would give me the time for additional musings.

One month is killer. It would be cool with our old contests where it was enough to submit the finished artwork (it would force the participants to stop wasting time and get on with it), but with all those progress shots and insight on thinking processes this one is more of a back and forth situation which needs more time to take effect (It took me a week to comment on your contest post, now imagine participants waiting a week for crits and feedback on their concepts). The ability to develop, adapt and change directions becomes important we'll need a bit more room.

I like the idea, but I'm not sure I like/understand the "design sheet". So we have to have the details of the character in rotation and ect? I suppose I can do that, but I feel like it limits the submissions to something more fantasy. Like if I wanted to do a piece that was more conceptual, that used just regular people, would I have a character sheet? What if you didn't really see them in the illustration?

I suppose I can adapt and I suppose that is the point of the contest :P Just a thought

Ill talk to the other mods about extending the deadline.

How you show your designs is up to you, and what your designs are up to you as well.
I think the important distinction for the design sheets is that they do not need to be polished, they only need to communicate.
The idea is to get fleshed out ideas for characters.

Im not sure how making something tangible makes it trapped in the realm of fantasy?

Do your regular people have designs? Then yes.

The competition is about narrative illustration. You are telling a story with the final image. Designing the story and characters are an important part of it. If you feel that you can tell the story better by excluding characters go for it, but you should be thinking of the missing character as being equally important to those in frame.

you know what I think about this. i think a longer deadline doesn't hurt. and maybe would be appropriate, given there's more material to produce.

whatever you decide, make it early in the contest, while there's still time.

I did have a serious think about this compo and i became pretty stressed about it. The challenge is deceptively simple with infinite ideas and possibilities.

I did have a rough idea what it would be, but whether i have the time to do it remains to be seen. I would probably need to write up my design brief and that would consist of several pages as i try and find out what i'm hunting, who hunts them and the reason to hunt them. For food, safety, pleasure or social reasons and provide and indepth reason to explaining the social aspects that would influence the threat, the people and the style of the entire piece. too open and it wouldn't be effective.

Gah... too much thinking...

I'm just saying if I have a guy in a jacket, a character sheet of a guy in a jacket is gonna be boring and not really provide relevant information. Something like an armored warrior, or an interesting creature, or some sort of vehicle is going to be more interesting and have more relevant information. Everybody knows how pants function/look, not the case with things that don't exist in reality.

I do have an idea and I'm want to contribute...for example, one possible option might show only the arm and hand of a character. I'm totally for the WIP thread showing your development, but I think having a "character sheet" might not work in some cases. How would I/do I need to flesh out the rest of the character to whom the arm belongs to?

Johnway:
Good luck man. Just a bit of advice that helps me when im working though. "every idea is worth following through to find its quality". its often difficult to evaluate an idea until you start working. Considering all your ideas as being awesome is a completly different mindset to looking for the perfect idea.

Meatloaf: Well yes of course everyone has seen pants, but the choice of clothing really matters. There isnt just one type of clothing that people wear. Try and think about how his clothing reflects his personality, the climate of the scene and his social standing. There is so much that can be designed here and will add to the scene if you just dare to think about it. And that's not getting into his body build and his face as well as his facial hair, possible accessories like watches. The list goes on man.

Designing realistic characters can be subtle but it is every bit as important as designing fantasy characters.
Also remember that they are design sheets, they can be as rough as you want, they can just be a page of brain dropping for all i care, just as long as they show the characters.

I updated the section that states you need to post in the wip secton to needing to post in the art critique section. Just to stop any confusion about the board changes.
