I don't remember the last time I did cel shaded lineart. Must have been years ago.

The Smith, in a sort of Etrian Odyssey-esque style.

(NSFW) Lobster-maid I did a while back, didn't finish.

Sketch. Might do something with it, might not. I like girls with embroidered capes.

How'd I do?

The face is nicely defined. I've been thinking about trying to paint on photoshop and everytime i paint, it feels like i'm using big felt tip pens and i'm struggling to take things to the next level. My guess its flow and opacity that defines texture.

I did come across this guy who seems to do some absolutely stunning work in a painting style and defines everything without lines.

i'm trying to figure out how the person does it. if you come across anything that might help let me know.

Hello djizomdjinn

Thank you for taking up my challenge.

I made a little paint over. It is not very good but there are a few things I'd like to point out:

your character is looking up but you moved only the eyes and the rest of the face stayed stiff. it is essentail to place the features correctly so that the face retains its shape.

You used restricted values, which can look great if pulled off well, but your painting struggles with defining the shapes this way, so you went in and drew on strokes to help you save the individual shapes. Thus the painting became inconsistent.

It is always better to paint than to draw in more extreme values to bring the message across (I pushed the values quite a bit, so I had more freedom with shadows and lights and it is easier to make that work)

One other thing lamb did but didnt highlight was the effective separation of light and dark while defining the form. The darkest value in the light is brighter than the brightest value in the shadow. This creates a clearer illusion of form and aligns more closely to the effect of light irl. This is how to make limited values work.

Thanks guys!

More practice, in between other stuff. I didn't really do restricted values on purpose, I think it just became really dark because my eyes started reading my base 75% gray ground as white.

Most of my time sculpting, not enough time sketching. Though, I'd like to think that sculpting is helping me understand 3D forms better.

Anyways, playing around with some gradient mapping.

I started getting frustrated, and I think it shows in the quality of these next few.

I also discovered the luminance color picker in Photoshop. I think this'll help me resolve some of my desaturated color problems.

Lighting does seem stronger. Hope to see you incorporate it into your next finished piece.

I think my poses are getting worse. Need to go out and do gestural studies I guess.

Huh, now that you mention it, it does look like your last couple of drawings all kind of use the same slightly tilted right upward body pose. I like the designs on the last 2. What are they for?

Nmn: Thanks!

RobotCat: Just a couple of short phrase prompts, namely "jellyfish mermaid" and "fashion prosthetics". Speaking of which, a second painting for that prompt.

Trying to copy a photo ref without actually tracing. What I learned: my eyes and mouths are still all over the place in shape and placement, but surprisingly I can paint noses fairly well. Yaaaaay (deadpan).

The skin tone rendering on you study turned out pretty well. The mouth is definitely harder to place if you're drawing it at an angle.
