I am a big fan of concept art (the forum too!), so I would like to see either an environment or a creature contest. I'm usually a character artist, so I would like to get my teeth (and tablet pen!) into something new.

Well the abilities thing was really just to add more depth to the contest then just designing a look. Thought it would be a whole new dimension for the judging. Though you're right as I'm sure some people would go overboard. We could just do it for just the character concept and look. Judge on originality and aesthetics of design. Just thought it would be an idea with as few restrictions as possible. You can really go nuts with this idea and it lets the greatest parts of your imagination come out and have fun.

i don't even know if this is allowed but can i just make my own thread in the contest area, i wanna host weekly sketch group theres no prize but its good practice and a chance to draw different things you usually don't =/

- all you need to submit is a good sketch that goes with the theme of the week!
- the sketch can be as finished as you want it to be.
-tune in the next week for a new theme =D

those are the rules for my idea all i need to know is if i'm allowed to do this and can i make a thread in the contest area because i see a lot of good ideas formulating here but none of them being used =P (IF I CANT MAKE A THREAD IN CONTEST AREA THEN WHERE CAN I?)

also i making some banners soon so if anyone wants to put them on there DA, blog, CA, ect, page that'l be cool so we can get more people =D

That's not too bad of an idea. Maybe make it longer than a week though because some people might lag behind because of issues with life. There could be major contests with full blown drawings, maybe even colored/painted if you can, and then there's monthly (or any other period) themes where people put up sketches that don't have to be called done. I like it.

How about the concept of "easy as pie". You draw something that's usually hard to do but done in an easy and imaginative way. Like at a military school you have to cross a gorge by a rope and instead you just use a jetpack and fly across. Something hard made easy by some outside force you normally wouldn't have.

Draw the Ban Hammer.

I know us Mods use it a lot, but what does it look like?

Actually I like the sound of that one Az. That would be a great next contest. You should also depict someone wielding the hammer.

Famous movie/play/novel/comic spinoff. Among all the forced suggestions I made, I think this is the most badass (and I suspect that someone already suggested this same thing)

Well since the next month we do a contest might be October, and I know the theme has been used before, but it's good, so how about something Halloween/monster related? Like design a Godzilla type monster. Or create a slasher film bad guy.

This may be a crazy thought, but perhaps the theme could be playing with food or making the weirdest meal ever kind of deal for a contest. Mama told ya not to play with your food, but she didn't say you couldn't illustrate that. Some examples could include an illustration of a little circus made out of mash potatoes or a cartoonish squid on a plate staring you square in the eye.

We could have a contest where each participant is randomly assigned a stereotypical Halloween themed noun (ie: pumpkin, witch, zombie, etc) and then has to make a Halloween themed illustration based off it. It could be an interesting exercise in avoiding blatant clichés when it's hard to get away from it. But it also offers some fun freedom :]

Man, I can't believe it's already been a year since the last contest I entered on this forum :I that's frightening.

Pick a bot from the site and make anime versions of it. Submission should include at least a fragment of the bot's deeply poetic nonsense. Contestants must show process so that we can turn them into tutorials to get new members. In addition, we would be making use of Fried Spam.

I also like Manamaraya's suggestion.

Fourth to Mana's idea.

Will come back with a contest idea tomorrow when I don't have a midterm.

thought i just re-post this, i still like this idea...
magic book
creative illustration idea

draw a picture of some one or some people who find a book of alchemy or magic and out of curiosity try one of the spells out. capture the moment of the spell happening

-try to capture the emotion and expressions of the spell they casted and/or the creature they summoned actually coming to life.

another idea...if any of you have read Calvino's "Invisible Cities," the contest would be to depict a fantastic city from the viewpoint of a traveler. that is, expanding or exaggerating a characterizing a property that you might find in reality into an idealized, dream city...maybe a bit too involving =p

or maybe just a 'stranger in a strange land,' depicting a traveler in a sweeping, unfamiliar world.

another environment contest idea: instead of a landscape or cityscape, maybe a contest about cloudscapes? focus on depicting expansive space and a sense of the gargantuan.
something I just thought of: design an alien character or creature, and depict what kind of internal organs might be in it, or skeletal structure/muscular system.

think about things that might be fun, or things that you want practice with. contests are a great impetus to try things that you wouldn't otherwise try.
Started reading this thread at page one and all of these suggestions seemed great. Some other ideas:
  • Redraw an existing comic page as if it were another style of comic.

  • Paint an environment that demonstrates some chosen aspect of color theory effectively (complementary colors, ambient light, ...)
    • The aspect would be chosen ahead of time so everyone can work toward the same goal.

  • Depict an existing character at different ages (e.g., 5, 10, 20, 40, and 70).
    • This would work best if the character is a mortal human who actually ages significantly between these stages and not something that doesn't change much like a robot or an immortal fairy princess pagan goddess.

  • Draw a one-page comic that includes a dramatic reversal of fortune.
