Well give us a little background on the project... Are they realistic ships, used in modern day navy... or do they have a fantasy/sci-fi setting or what?
Best thing to do is to start by gathering lots of reference images. I'm sure someone around here knows a good place to get images of ships. You won't get very far without a little research, it'll give your designs stronger foundations. Also you could try Alchemy for generating random shapes, just if your mind is blank and need something to trigger ideas.
