Sounds like quite the conundrum you have there. I think you are hitting a problem that many many beginners have hit. Quick sketching actually doesn't help you improve, and from what i've seen can often make people worse. You improve by learning how to copy life and photos, and taking time and being thoughtful, and by thinking about what you are doing. I can probably be a lot more help if you post up some work.
