Good Idea. I haven't tried all these, but I've heard people mention them before. Here's a few more I can think of off the top of my head.

Paint.Net - Requires .net on windows and is improving all the time. At the very least, it has layer support. I think they're working on tablet support.

Pixia - Haven't used it before, but designed more for painting, I believe.

Inkscape - Free Vector drawing program.

Easytoon - basic black and white animations. Alt. Link - http://www.dualtranslations.org/nyuu/easytoon.zip

Art of Illusion - don't know much about it except that's it's free and for 3d an animation.

Maya - learning edition is also free, but puts a watermark on all your images and uses a special fileformat. Also not supposed to use it for commercial stuff.

For some reason Gimp isn't opening on my comp. I have tried so hard. But, could someone know wht the problem is? if so, please do tell me! Thnx!

gzus 01-08-2006 03:29 PM

Oh man, dude...GIMP's open source. That means there's a LOT of reasons it could not be opening. My guess would be you didn't install the runtime environment, or you didn't get a compiled version of the software; if those things are in order, consult the GIMP FAQs. There's a lot that can go wrong.

I did install runtime before Gimp and then i got confused becuz it wont open. i downloaded it form download.com. I'm sad it isnt opening...I guess i'll have to consult the Gimp's FAQ.

This should solve all your gimp installation troubles for now:)

go here->http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

-you pretty much want to get everything but the animation package (you'll need the help file too just in case)

-I know the gimp site's kinda easy to get lost in so that's why I responded... (try both gtk installations just in case)

I forgot to mention I put the opencanvas script viewer utility on pk a while back, so here's the link for that. It's a separate app that lets you playback wpe files for the 1.1 version. You kind of have to guess at the buttons since it's supposed to be in Japanese, but it's not too hard to figure out.

i got open canvas a while back, it took too long to figure out so i just deleted it.

pivot is a good program for stick animations, and itrs really easy to use.

How is open canvas difficult to figure out, once I set it to english it was easy as pie and i love it to death.

Teriffic thanks for all the links ^_^ greatly helpful

Hello, i just came across this website and found the tutorials very useful....

I just wanted to give a heads-up to a nice little FREE tool for converting raster images to vector images (ie: EPS) works with Linux and Windows. It can be found here: http://autotrace.sourceforge.net/

I love want it does - can improve the look of your line art considerably.

small Painter-esque program. interface of the current build reflects the programmer's influence

gmpilot 03-07-2006 01:59 AM

I just want to say that pixia is a very good free lineart program, but a horrid coloring program.

Non Existent IBW 03-08-2006 07:58 PM

Hey fellas is there an open canvas for mac?

hezzart 03-09-2006 03:24 PM

'JANUS' I know what you're thinking, very awkward name. Just a smooth simple drawing app.

I am wondering the very same thing.

Saw these posted over at conceptart. Figured I would share here, but I haven't really tried them yet.

Sai: http://www.systemax.jp/sai/
All in Japanese and the free version may only be a trial, but some of the people at conceptart seemed to like it.

Twisted Brush: http://www.pixarra.com/download.html
The 3.5 version is free, but the newer one is not.

This is a good program for those of you that can't be bothered spending money on photoshop.
Great Program!!:D
